Terms of Service

These terms cover the CrownAccess website, the map, and the CrownAccess iPhone app. By using any of them you agree to what is written here.

Last updated: September 2, 2026

The short version

CrownAccess is a planning aid built from Ontario government open data. It is not a legal authority on where you may camp, hunt, fish, or drive. Signs on the ground, the regulations, and conservation officers all outrank anything you see on this map. Check the official source before you rely on it, and use your own judgement in the bush.

What CrownAccess is

CrownAccess maps Crown land in Ontario using open data published by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and other public sources, including the Crown Land Use Policy Atlas, the MNRF road network, posted sign inventories, Wildlife Management Unit boundaries, and parcel data. We process that data to make it easier to read.

Every layer is a model of the data as it was published. Government datasets are updated on their own schedule, contain errors, and are sometimes years behind the ground. Our processing can introduce its own errors on top of that.

What CrownAccess is not

It is not permission. A polygon that says camping is permitted in principle is a statement about land use policy, not a licence, a permit, or consent from a landowner.

It is not legal advice. Nothing on the site or in the app is legal advice about the Public Lands Act, the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, municipal by-laws, or anything else.

It is not a safety service. There is no emergency function, no search and rescue, and no guarantee that a mapped road is passable or that a mapped area is safe to reach. Fire bans, weather, water levels, wildlife, active forestry operations, and washed-out crossings are your responsibility to check.

It is not a substitute for the official source. Where a regulation matters, read the Ontario page or the regulations summary we link to.

Your responsibility outdoors

You are responsible for your own safety and for obeying the law. That includes holding any licence, tag, or permit you need, respecting posted signs and closures, staying off private land without permission, following fire restrictions, and telling somebody where you are going. Carry a paper map and a compass; batteries die and cell service ends well before the road does.

Accounts

You can use the public map without an account. If you create one, you are responsible for the activity that happens under it. Give us an email address you actually control, since that address is how you sign in.

You can delete your account at any time, from Settings in the iPhone app or by emailing us. Deleting your account removes your saved spots and cancels any active subscription immediately. It cannot be undone.

Subscriptions and payment

Some features require a paid subscription. What is included is described where you subscribe, and it can change over time as layers are added or improved.

Free trial. Where a free trial is offered, it runs for the period stated at checkout and then converts to a paid subscription automatically unless you cancel before it ends. Cancelling during the trial costs nothing.

Billing. Subscriptions renew automatically for the same period until cancelled. Prices are shown before you pay. Payments taken through the website are handled by Stripe; we never see or store your card details. Payments made through the App Store are handled by Apple under Apple's terms, and are managed and cancelled in your Apple account rather than here.

Cancelling. You can cancel at any time. Your access continues until the end of the period you have already paid for, and you are not charged again after that.

Refunds. We do not offer refunds for partial periods, but if something has gone wrong, email us and we will sort it out. Purchases made through the App Store are refunded by Apple, not by us.

Acceptable use

Use CrownAccess for your own planning and recreation. Do not scrape, bulk-download, or redistribute our processed layers or tiles; do not resell access; do not try to break, overload, or reverse-engineer the service; and do not use it to help anybody trespass or break the law.

The underlying government data is open and you are welcome to go and get it from the source. What we ask you not to take is the processing, the tiles, and the presentation, which are ours.

Availability

We do not promise the service will be available at any particular time. It is run by one person, it depends on third-party hosting and data providers, and it can go down or change without notice. Offline map packs are provided so a phone still works where there is no signal, but they are only as current as the day you downloaded them.

Limitation of liability

CrownAccess is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, or merchantability.

To the fullest extent the law allows, CrownAccess and its operator are not liable for any loss, injury, fine, prosecution, property damage, or other harm arising from your use of the service or from any error, omission, or delay in the data. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

Nothing in these terms limits any right you have under applicable consumer protection law that cannot be limited by agreement.

Changes

We may update these terms. The date at the top changes when we do. If a change materially affects a paid subscription, we will tell subscribers by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use the service after a change means you accept it.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the laws of Canada that apply there, and the courts of Ontario have jurisdiction.
